Introduction

Our first Newsletter

Now that there are so many classes and so many people interested in private lessons, I thought it would be useful to keep a Newsletter for students and instructors interested in the Virtue School of Martial Arts.  For those or you who are new to the disciplines, this will be a good way to be introduced to what you are getting into.  As the Chief Instructor, I would like to welcome you to the Martial Arts.  The Virtue Martial Arts organization consists of a group of Instructors and all the students.  The primary discipline taught is the Filipino Martial Art of Kali.  In addition, I am also teaching Women’s Self Defense.  This is being taught in the form of Brazilian Jujitsu.  I also teach another form of Filipino Martial Arts called Serrada Escrima, .  For more information, log onto www.winterdog.com and click on the Martial Arts link.

New Procedures and Policies

What has changed? Well not much.

This quarter, I have incorporated a few changes.  First of all, we are reinstating the Jeet Kune Do class, which was canceled about a year ago.  This time, the class will be taught with some substantial differences.  In the past, the class was taught in a very loose way with not a lot of structure enforced.

Upon reviewing the results of this approach, I have determined that it was a mistake and that students actually did not learn as well as they could have.  I also did not have a lot of charted progress in the way of levels or phases of training.  Therefore, it was difficult to differentiate advanced students from novices.  This made teaching the class difficult as advanced students were often not challenged enough while novices were sometimes left behind. This time, I have set up a structured curriculum of 6 distinctly different levels of training.

These six levels of training are outlined on my website.  You can view these at www.winterdog.com by clicking on the Martial Arts link and then clicking on Requirements, and then clicking on Basic Requirements.

Levels were originally developed only for students who were taking private lessons but now it is clear to me that this curriculum should be made available to everyone.

Student Profile

Justine Simpkins

Justine Simpkins started with Karate while living in Carmichael.  She studied at Kovars Kenpo Karate school and achieved a second degree Black Belt before coming to Calpoly.  When she came to Calpoly, she started studying Jeet Kune Do.  After a couple of years with Jeet Kune Do, she turned to Women's Self Defense Jujitsu.  She enjoyed Jujitsu so much she became a chief advocate of the art.  She has now been training in Jujitsu for two years and has also branched out into Aikijujitsu.
